That was an easy bet. Mets fans, overall, like Willie. Granted, the team did not make the playoffs this year and broke the heart of every Met fan far and wide but most of us do not blame the manager for that. I blame Tom Glavine personally for two terrible September starts against Florida where he couldn't get an out. Obviously, the last game of the season was the worse of the two. I blame Mota, I blame Perez the last friday night of the season where he hit two straight batters with the bases loaded. I can blame a lot of people here but Willie I only blame a little. The Art Howe years are long gone. The Willie Randolph era is still a good era for the Mets. They've played meaningful games under his tenure pretty much all three years. He's been in first place most of the last two years. Two seasons ago, he was a HR away from the World Series (damn Beltran striking out looking!). Although this past season, Mets fan had high expectations, I can not fault everything on Willie. He cares about his players and tries to put the best team out there night after night. We wouldn't be having this conversation if the Mets won one more game that last week of the season. I also think the Mets organization has spent enough money on paying managers who have been fired seasons ago long enough and they don't want to do the same with Willie. Besides, who is a better fit? Valentine (been there done that)? Torre (no thank you)? LaRussa (we don't need him to drink more)? No one else can lead this team like Willie can for the time being. He has the respect of his players and fans, mostly. I think he will steer the ship right in 2008 provided they fix the kinks out of their starting rotation, bullpen, and outfield.

One more note just for fun - 80% of people polled on ESPN.com think the Mets did the right thing by retaining Willie. Way to go, Mets fans, way to support a guy who falls short of expectations repeatedly!
