Joe didn't seem to be very much in favor of Burrell, and I did say that I don't think he's likely to sign here, but he's a guy I would pursue hard if I were the Mets GM. It may not be realistic, but the Mets do have the ability to outprice the Phillies on Burrell. Worst case scenario, Burrell signs with the Phillies, but at an ornerous contract that they won't be able to afford 2-3 years from now. Best-case scenario, the Mets improve their LF production in 2009, and the Phillies have a decline in LF production. I don't see the problem with at least getting involved here.

The saves record is going to make K-Rod too expensive, and that's a meaningless record. I'd much rather take Fuentes at less dollars and fewer years, because he would be a good bet to at least come close to K-Rod's production, if not exceed it. Whomever lands Fuentes this offseason may laugh at the team who gets K-Rod 2-3 years from now.

I think you both are crazy for wanting to sign Burrell and secondly thinking he might actually sign with the Mets. Phillies fans, who used to boo him regularly, have grown to like the guy. With his team on the verge of winning the World Series, I doubt they will dismantle them. I am not against getting Fuentes. He is a much cheaper option than K-Rod minus the flare and fire that accompanies the Angels closer. I would prefer K-Rod truthfully. Although he blew his share of saves, he had a ton of opportunities. He still averages more than a strikeout an inning and I think he just got tired by the end of the season. His ERA and WHIP are pretty good and he's only 26 and been playing since 02.

I would love to have Brian Roberts on the team. This guy can steal bases, hit, and play a very good web gem filled defensive second base but I agree it might be a pipe dream.

Forget Heilman entirely and his "injury." Apparently Johan Santana had a knee problem and it didn't affect him too much. He'll be gone before opening day, mark my word.

Yeah, Roberts is probably a pipe dream, but I like him better than Hudson. I think the Hudson contract is going to wind up being the mistake of the postseason, particularly if he signs with a team that plays in a pitcher's park. He's going to get too many years, and he hasn't been all that great away from Chase Field, which is a hitter's ballpark, plus his defense declined sharply in 2008. There are all sorts of warning signs there.

As far as Lowe and if he's a #2...I say, who cares? Lowe, Pelfrey, and Maine all profile as #2-3 type starters. I mean, Pelfrey was essentially the Mets' #2 this year, and the rotation did well, right? I don't see the big deal there.

After I found out Heilman was injured in spring training and pitched the entire year hurt, I came to the conclusion that the Mets should bring him back for one more year. He's been compensating for a bad knee all season, that could explain a lot of his lousy performances. With an offseason to heal and get his windup back where it needs to be, plus with Peterson not around to tell him he can't start, who knows, he could be a solid piece of the rotation. Plus, he's too talented to just give away, and based on last year, that's what the Mets would have to do with him. Bring him back for one more year, try him as a starter, and if he stinks, cut ties.

And as for Burrell...all hitters are streaky. Granted, Burrell does tend to run hot and cold, but I like that he's a power-hitting right handed bat that plays a position the Mets need who won't cost as much as Manny Ramirez. Plus, he takes away an important bat from the Phillies, and they don't really have anybody who can replace him ready, so they would have to replace him with another free agent, and anybody they would sign would be worse than Burrell. It improves the Mets, it weakens the Phillies, and in a division where every little bit helps, this would definitely help the Mets next year.

1. The the O's want to trade Brian Roberts, they can get much better for him than the Mets will offer, so I don't think that that is a possible move.

2. I totally agree that signing Hudson is a bad move, especially long- term, but short of a platoon, which I think is a BAD move, I don't see another way. As long as Louis Castillo is gone, it can't be worse.

3. Derek Lowe. I'd like him in the Mets rotation too, but if he's the #3 starter, who is #2? Pelfrey? Do you really have that much confidence in him? Maine? He's so inconsistent. I would love Lowe, but they also need to consider a somewhat younger #2 guy.

4. Brian Fuentes is a good option. Signing KRod would be a Bobby Bonnilla-level mistake. Fuentes' ground ball ratio will be a big plus in the new park if the Mets can get a good defensive second basemen to help up Delgado on the right side.

5. Heilmen to the rotation? Really? I was all for it last year and the year before, but now? He's the kind of guy who is screaming for a change of scenery. He may become a really solid pitcher, but I dont' see it happening here. There have been too many big moments that he has single-handedly blown.

6. Pat Burrel... honestly, I was expecting the Mets to get him before he signed his last four-year deal with the Psillies, but do we really need another streaky hitter to bat behind Delgado? If the two got hot at the same time, the Mets wouldn't lose a game. But they're both cold more often than they're hot, so I'm not sure about this move. I like him a lot but I've got some real questions about it first.
