The scouting reports on K-Rod are why we cannot offer him our endorsement. The drastic drop in speed on his fastball, coupled with his increased use of breaking pitches makes us wonder if he is as healthy as he claims. After what happened with Billy Wagner this year, the last thing the Mets need is to get caught with their pants down at closer. That's why we continue to back Brian Fuentes, who remains the healthier choice between the premier closing candidates on this market, and remains the more likely choice to agree to a 3 year contract.

I can tell you one thing...I do not want Boby Jenks as my closer. Granted, he did have a good season last year as a closer with a nice low ERA (2.38) and 30/34 saves converted...what worried me was his strikeouts were way down (38 K's in 61 IP). Thats pretty terrible. His K ratio has gone down the last two seasons where he's not even averaging a K an inning. I want a guy that can shut the door in the 9th with a strikeout. Is that too hard to ask?

Now to your support of Fuentes. I will not be upset if the Mets get Fuentes but I want K-Rod. His career ERA is 2.35 his more than a strikeout an inning ratio throughout his career. He is a year removed from a 67 IP and a 90 strikeout season. He will be in a new league and to me that means new guys will get fooled by his junk. Oh yeah, he's 7 years younger than old man Fuentes. Give him his 4 year 52 million deal and lets play ball

I will be sad if the Mets give K-Rod four years, and I will be sad if Fernando Martinez is traded to acquire Bobby Jenks, though I don't think Jenks is really on the Mets' radar. But that is talking of pitchers we don't endorse, not the pitcher we do, and that man is Brian Fuentes, the next closer of the New York Mets!

the more I think about it, the more I agree. I won't be sad if KRod gets the job, and I won't be sad of Bobby Jenks get the job (though I know you will) but I would prefer Fuentes. (As long as it's not longer than a three-year deal.)
